씨앗은 말이 없지만 그 침묵 속에는 우주가 들어있다. 단단한 껍질 안에 응축된 생명의 기운, 터지기 직전의 팽팽한 장력, 그리고 곧 펼쳐질 확장의 약속. 이능호는 이 침묵하는 생명의 언어를 빚어낸다.
갤러리 지우헌은 11월 5일부터 12월 13일까지 한국 도예를 대표하는 작가 이능호의 개인전 《씨앗의 말》을 개최한다. 1994년부터 30여 년간 흙과 불로 대화해온 작가가 4년 만에 선보이는 이번 전시는 그의 대표작 〈집〉과 투각 기법으로 완성한 신작 〈집-그 이후〉를 중심으로 구성된다.
검은 바위처럼 보이는 〈집〉은 씨앗을 형상화한 작품이다. 이는 전통 옹기 제작 기법인 타렴(打簾)으로 만든 것으로, 흙 가락을 쌓아 올리며 두드려 형태를 완성한다. 한 달 넘게 지속되는 고된 노동이지만, 반복되는 리듬 속에서 작가는 생각을 비우고 흙 자체와 만난다. 그렇게 빚어진 작품은 자연 속에 놓였을 때 경계를 잃는다. 마치 원래 그 자리에 있었던 것처럼, 풍경 일부가 되어버린다.
이번 전시의 중심인 〈집-그 이후〉 시리즈는 투각(透刻) 기법으로 완성한 16점의 신작이다. 투각은 도자 표면에 구멍을 뚫거나 일부를 도려내 빛과 그림자가 어우러지게 하는 기법이다. 이능호는 이를 통해 씨앗이 터지며 새로운 생명으로 확장되는 순간을 포착했다. 빛이 작품 내부를 통과하며 만드는 그림자는 보이지 않는 생명의 흐름을 시각화한다.
'집'이 씨앗의 응집이라면, '집-그 이후'는 그 확장이다. 씨앗 속에 갇혀 있던 에너지가 껍질을 뚫고 새로운 형태로 번져간다. 생명의 변화, 시간의 흐름, 관계의 확산이 하나의 형상 안에 담긴 채 공간으로 스며든다.
《씨앗의 말》은 결국 우리 각자의 내면에 놓인 ‘씨앗’을 향한 초대이다. 흙에서 태어나 빛으로 열린 도자들은 생명이 품은 순환과 침묵, 그리고 다시 태어남의 순간을 일깨운다.
작가의 손끝에서 흙은 사물의 형태를 넘어, 존재 그 자체의 언어로 변모한다. 이능호의 작품 앞에 선 우리는 말없는 씨앗이 오랜 시간을 지나 건네는 우주의 숨결을 듣는다.
A seed does not speak, yet an entire universe resides within its silence. In its firm shell is the concentrated force of life, the taut tension of a moment just before bursting open, and the promise of expansion soon to unfold.

Gallery Jiwooheon presents Words of Seed, a solo exhibition by Lee Neungho, one of the leading figures in contemporary Korean ceramics, from November 5 to December 13. Having worked with clay and fire for over thirty years since 1994, the artist now returns after four years to reveal a body of work that centers on his representative series House and a new development of it, House — After, created through a perforated carving technique.
House, resembling a dark stone, embodies the form of a seed. It is made using taryeom, a traditional method of building with clay coils and shaping the form through continuous pounding. The labor continues for more than a month, yet within the rhythmic repetition the artist empties thought and meets the clay itself. Once completed and placed in nature, the work loses its boundaries, becoming part of the landscape as if it had always belonged there.
At the center of this exhibition is House — After, a new series of sixteen works made using tugak, a carving technique that pierces or removes sections of the ceramic surface to orchestrate light and shadow. Through this, Lee captures the precise moment a seed breaks open and expands into new life. The shadows cast by light passing through the hollow interior visualize the flow of life that cannot be seen directly.
If House is the condensation of a seed, House — After is its unfolding. The energy once sealed within breaks through the shell and diffuses into new forms. The transformation of life, the passage of time, and the expansion of relationships permeate space in a single sculptural gesture. Words of Seed ultimately invites us to the seeds that lie within each of us. Born from earth and opened by light, these ceramic forms awaken the cycle of life, silence, and renewal.
Through the artist’s hands, clay moves beyond objecthood and becomes a language of being itself. Standing before Lee Neungho’s works, we hear the breath of the universe that the wordless seed carries across time.
이능호(b.1965)는 국민대학교 조형대학에서 공예미술학을 전공하고, 전통 옹기 제작 기술을 전수받으며 도자예술의 기반을 쌓았다. 현재까지 13회의 개인전을 열었으며, 주요 전시로는 엘케이트 갤러리(2021), 조은숙 갤러리(2014), 포스코미술관(2000) 등이 있다. 〈KCDF x Liaigre London〉(런던, 2024), 〈라트비아 도자 비엔날레〉(2023), 〈밀라노 디자인위크 한국공예특별전〉(2022) 등 다수의 국제전에 참여했으며, 작품은 리움미술관, 호암미술관, 제네시스 라운지(신라호텔) 등에 소장되어 있다.
Lee Neungho (b. 1965) studied Craft and Applied Arts at Kookmin University and built the foundation of his ceramic practice by training in traditional onggi making techniques. He has held thirteen solo exhibitions to date, including shows at L+K Gallery (2021), Johyun Gallery (2014), and POSCO Art Museum (2000). He has participated in numerous international exhibitions such as KCDF x Liaigre London (London, 2024), the Latvia Ceramics Biennale (2023), and the Korean Craft Special Exhibition at Milan Design Week (2022). His works are included in the collections of the Leeum Museum of Art, the Ho-Am Art Museum, and the Genesis Lounge at The Shilla Hotel, among others.

갤러리 지우헌은 ㈜디자인하우스에서 운영하는 전시공간으로 북촌 한옥마을에 위치하고 있다. 한옥을 개조한 독특한 구조로 전통적인 미감과 현대적인 편의성을 두루 갖추고 있으며, 2016년 서울시 우수한옥으로 선정되었을 만큼 뛰어난 건축미를 갖고 있다. 과거의 역사를 담고 있는 공간에서 현대미술을 조명하는 시공간적 특징을 가진 갤러리로서 동시대 미술의 흐름에 동참하며 국내·외 신진작가 발굴과 후원에 힘쓰고 있다.
Gallery Jiwooheon is an exhibition venue operated by Designhouse, Inc., located in Bukchon Hanok Village. It was selected as the 2016 Seoul Excellent Hanok for its distinctive structure remodeled from a hanok, which offers both traditional aesthetics and contemporary convenience and has remarkable architectural beauty. It aspires to identify outstanding new artists at home and abroad while supporting the trend of contemporary art as a gallery with temporal and spatial qualities that shines a light on contemporary art in a space possessing the history of the past.
